Boom truck cranes are primarily wheeled trucks, often with a flatbed body with a boom crane installed on the bed. Sometimes the crane has a dedicated operator cab, other times the crane has standing controls located near the turret. When outfitted to lift and move materials, there are usually one or two winches mounted to the truck frame or bottom end of the boom that can raise and lower materials attached to the load-handling device or hook at the end of the load line. These trucks are highly versatile machines; some boom truck cranes come equipped with aerial work platforms on the end of the boom instead of hooks, but in most cases, these can be replaced if a platform isn’t what you’re after. Unlike truck cranes, boom truck cranes tend to lack a counterweight, which limits the maximum payload capacity of the crane.

Types Of Boom Truck Cranes

There are two types of boom truck cranes: mounted and unmounted. Mounted boom cranes tend to reside at the lighter-duty end of the spectrum compared to lattice and telescopic boom truck cranes and crawlers. Often, these cranes feature telescoping booms designed to extend and retract as needed. Some mounted boom cranes have outriggers capable of providing a stable foundation while the crane is in operation. Unmounted boom truck cranes tend to be wheeled flatbed or carrier trucks with a removable boom crane mounted behind the cab. Sometimes items categorized as unmounted boom truck cranes are just that: a truck crane for sale on its own, with no vehicle.
