About Bucket Trucks & Service Trucks

Terex XT Pro 60 Bucket Truck Crane

Bucket trucks, also referred to as “service trucks,” are utility vehicles with a crane mounted behind the truck cab. The feature that sets these trucks apart from most truck cranes is the bucket attached to the end of the crane. Sometimes these cranes have ground-level controls, but most often the controls are located in the bucket, which is designed to hold one or two workers at a time. These cranes are ideally suited to utility maintenance applications and other jobs, such as window cleaning, pruning treetops, hanging lights, and other jobs that require elevated access.

    Weights & Measures

Bucket truck and service truck cranes tend to lack a counterweight, which limits the maximum payload capacity of the crane and overall lift height, which commonly falls into the 9- to 13-metre (29.5- to 42.5-foot) range or the 14- to 18-m (46- to 60-ft) range, and the most capable trucks in this category can lift the bucket up to 30 m (98 ft) or more.

Bucket truck cranes are often traditional hydraulic boom cranes. Others feature telescoping booms designed to readily extend and retract as needed, and others still feature a knuckle boom-style crane that can fold up to leave space on an adjacent flatbed for hauling additional materials.
