Compared to lattice boom crawler cranes, which can only be folded to shorten the boom for transport, the telescoping boom’s multi-section design allows a load to be extended or retracted with the load on the hook. The main telescopic bottom can often retract to heights less than 15 metres (50 feet) and extend upward to more than 30 m (100 ft). Some of the largest telescopic boom crawlers can achieve a maximum lift height of more than 60 m (200 ft) through the use of jib extensions.

Lift Capacity

The majority of telescopic boom crawler cranes are equipped to lift more than 27.2 t (30 U.S. t), and there are a good number of models designed to lift more than 90 t. Manufacturers often provide different counterweight packages to give operations the ability to minimize transport costs while optimizing lift capacity for the jobsite. Load charts typically include a wide range of radii, and modern telescopic boom crawler cranes often feature real-time load monitoring technology to avoid overloads and situations where extending the boom or lowering the angle would bypass the safe operating range.

Many telescopic boom crawler cranes are equipped with a cabin that can tilt upward to better view loading operations, and some newer models feature cameras on the end of the hoist that feed a bird’s-eye view to an in-cab display. Remote control options are also available to allow operators to control the hoist from outside the cab and precisely lower loads into place when an outside view is advantageous. External cameras, such as a rearview or right-side camera, provide operators with all-around visibility to avoid jobsite accidents when moving loads and/or the crane.
