A telescopic boom truck crane is a heavy-duty truck, often with three or more axles, with a telescoping boom crane outfitted with its own operator cab mounted on top. These dual-cab trucks also often have two engines; one up front that powers the vehicle’s drivetrain and a second, rear engine for operating the crane.

Telescopic Boom vs. Lattice Boom Truck Cranes

Other common telescopic boom truck crane features include a long tail and counterweight behind the crane cab and a telescoping crane boom that is capable of bearing a significant amount of weight and can readily extend and retract as needed. This contrasts with lattice boom truck crane variants, which can only be folded to shorten the boom for transport.

Heavy-duty telescopic boom truck cranes usually come equipped with hydraulic outriggers capable of providing a stable foundation for lift operations. Lift capacities of telescopic boom truck cranes vary considerably, starting at around 32 tonnes (35 U.S. tons) and ranging up to as much as several hundred tonnes. Common boom lengths range from around 15 to 61 metres (50 to 200 feet) or more.
